Last night I attended a great event at the Boston Athenaeum. The former governor of Massachusetts, Charlie Baker (R.), and his Chief of Staff, Steve Kadish (D.), have written a phenomenal book about what it takes to build a successful government coalition, appropriately titled “Results.” They had a great conversation with Lee Pelton.

It was an inspiring evening, and I wanted to share a few of my takeaways.

  1. Talent is everywhere, it’s just a matter of giving that talent an opportunity. C. Baker
  2. Move beyond the binary choice, I prefer the ‘and’. ‘How can we build efficiencies AND continue to deliver services?’ S. Kadish
  3. You could read all the data, look at all the figures. But until you step out and speak to the people, you will never know what is actually going on. S. Kadish.
  4. It [government] is a ‘we’ game, not a ‘me’ game. C. Baker

If nothing else, be sure to check out Results by Charlie Baker and Steve Kadish. It lays the groundwork for what we have to do to build better and more effective governance.
